Learning From Frontline Movement Leaders
|
Since our last newsletter, we’ve witnessed the overturning of Roe v. Wade, seen climate change fuel another destructive hurricane season, and experienced increasing attacks on our democracy. During the same period, Congress passed the Inflation Reduction Act, which provided a groundbreaking investment in clean energy and lowered health care costs. Additionally, multiple states have codified the right to reproductive healthcare, and early polls suggest record-breaking voter turnout among youth during midterm elections.
At this pivotal moment, Tides has turned to our network of frontline leaders and fiscally sponsored partners working in environmental and reproductive justice to understand what their organizations are experiencing and what we can do to help.
Throughout this Corporate Social Impact Quarterly edition, you’ll find key takeaways from these conversations. You’ll hear directly from these leaders in their own words, learning more about their priorities for the coming months, and their perspectives on how corporations and philanthropists can advance their movements.
Tides is committed to sharing the perspectives of our grassroots partners to inform your social impact decisions. As always, we also invite you to let us know how we can best support you.

Tides' Corporate and Strategic Initiatives team hosted a reproductive justice convening earlier this month to lift up the voices and insights from grassroots leaders in the reproductive justice movement. The event featured our partners Nakia Woods, director of the California Coalition for Reproductive Freedom, and Lakeesha Harris and Michelle Erenberg, co-executive directors of Lift Louisiana. These inspiring leaders shared what they know about reproductive justice and offered our corporate social impact partners advice about actionable steps they can take to protect reproductive freedom and help people regain access to this fundamental human right.

During Climate Week NYC 2022, Tides Foundation launched its first climate justice gathering in support of strengthening the power of social movement leaders. We brought together Earthjustice President Abigail Dillen and Angela Mahecha, program director at the Tishman Environment and Design Center, in conversation with Kimberly Middleton, our new program officer for climate initiatives. They discussed the impact of the Environmental Justice for All Act, the Inflation Reduction Act, and how environmental racism is driving policy.
